Comments on: Acer Aspire One – How to flash bios

Please help! I have followed the instructions (using Karmic on an Aspire 5315, and the appropriate BIOS formware etc.), and everything goes well until I reboot and get to the part where I select option 5 (which is step 12 above). I get a screen of text that starts:
“UMB’s unavailable!”
and ends
“Invalid Opcode at 00D1 0898 0202 [and a whole string of similar numbers ending with] 05AA 10F9″

Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance

was my last hope to reactivate my keyboard of the netboot… well biosflash worked fine but my keyboard isn´t working. but big thanks for the guide
have you any idea what´s wrong with keyboard? otherwise i have to send it do acer :\

Probably a little late, but as I was searching for this info, maybe someone else is too, so I’d like to make a little update: Not sure since when, but when I downloaded the BIOS v.3310 update, it came packaged with a small Windows utility that flashes your BIOS automagically, reboots, and you’re all done. No need to create bootable usb’s nor to use ugly DOSes… yes, I know, no Linux app, but hey, maybe some day, for now it’s all we get!

My Acer wont start and i thougth if i update the bios it might work.
But how do i flash the bios if the computer screen is black?
I mean the computer AC is on but nothing shows om screen.

Just wanted to say: THANKS! I had been pulling my hair out over my AA1 refusing to charge the battery. Upgraded the bios to the latest version 3110 and it’s now charging. To others reading this: The flash drive *does* matter. I was using an old 128MB flash drive, thinking if it breaks it’s no big deal. After about half an hour of fighting I tried another one (1GB). The 1GB one worked. The moral: If you follow the above instructions carefully, and it doesn’t work, then the flash drive is almost certainly at fault.

Really sorry for the late reply mate.
As far as I know, there isn’t a way you can get your data back unless you go to a professional data retrieval center.
To get the netbook working again, you should just start installing XP again, and do not reboot until it tells you to.
If that doesn’t work, there could be something else wrong with it, report back if you can’t get it working

Thanks a million bro!! Worked flawlessly on a Kingston DataTraveler 1GB! …and fixed my battery not charging problem!

Acer should actually do a better job of explaining how it’s done, not just providing the flash ZIP and expect everyone to know how to go about.

What do you think the “P.” in “Horace P. Manure” stands for? Maybe “Horace Piece-of Manure”, or “Horace Packed-his-skull-with Manure”, or could it be “Horace Prefers-to-eat Manure”?
